Un appuntamento ormai storico per gli appassionati del cinema del sud del mondo, l’unico festival in Italia interamente dedicato alla conoscenza della cinematografia, delle realtà e delle culture dei paesi dell’Africa, dell’Asia e dell’America Latina. Oltre 50 nazioni rappresentate, circa 80 tra film e video proiettati.
Il programma del 23° Festival del Cinema Africano, d’Asia e America Latina prevede le ormai consuete due sezioni competitive Concorsi Finestre sul mondo – aperte ai lungometraggi di fiction e ai documentari di Africa, Asia e America Latina – e due concorsi riservati esclusivamente all’Africa: il Concorso per il Miglior Film Africano e il Concorso per il Miglior Cortometraggi Africano (aperto a fiction e documentari).

The statistics tell in Italy, almost a million young men and women were born to or raised by immigrant parents, and 12.6% of babies born in the county have non-Italian parents. Unlike most neighboring countries and the US, these men and women are denied the right to acquire Italian citizenship by the ius soli law, which results in 42% of them remaining aliens when they turn 18 (the age of maturity in the EU)… This is exactly the case of Fred Kuwornu, the director of the documentary Ius Soli. Kuwornu is a producer, filmmaker, activist and entrepeneur of Ghanaian origins who made this film to denounce this incomprehensible situation in contemporary Italy, urging for a response from the political authorities and the judiciary. “God gave us the victory and we are the Kings of Africa,” said a student called Apostle Paul. “I was very young when we won in ’94 but the memory has stayed until today. With this team we have a new future for Nigerian football. The team is very young,” he added. “Honestly, I was afraid to watch the match but now I am happy. I am cool.”

Khaira Arby, one of Africa’s most celebrated musicians, has performed all over the world, but there is one place she cannot visit: her native city of Timbuktu, a place steeped in history and culture but now ruled by religious extremists. One day, they broke into Arby’s house and destroyed her instruments. Her voice was a threat to Islam, they said, even though one of her most popular songs praised Allah. “They told my neighbors that if they ever caught me, they would cut my tongue out,” said Arby, sadness etched on her broad face.
