Mpumelelo Mcata, one of South Africa’s leading artists and cultural activists, asks: ‘What is Black Guilt? I’ve often asked myself, why can’t artist Kudzanai Chiurai be free to just paint flowers or some shit…?’ The answer comes in the form of the directors’ first feature, Black President. Premiered at the Berlinale earlier this year, the film questions the responsibility of African artists in a globalised universe, artists who find themselves “playing catch up” to the West instead of following their own paths.
